27 September - Remembrance Day

27 September 2025

Every year on September 27, the Republic of Azerbaijan observes Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Second Karabakh War in 2020.

On the morning of September 27, 2020, Armenian armed forces launched a large-scale provocation, targeting Azerbaijani military positions and civilian settlements. In response, the Azerbaijani Army launched a counteroffensive to protect civilians and repel the aggression. Over the course of 44 days, Azerbaijani forces liberated several occupied cities and districts, restoring the country’s territorial integrity.

One of the most significant turning points was the liberation of Shusha on November 8. This victory was decisive and led to a ceasefire agreement signed on November 10. Subsequently, Armenia also withdrew from the occupied regions of Aghdam, Kalbajar, and Lachin.

By the decree of President Ilham Aliyev dated December 2, 2020, Remembrance Day was officially established to be observed annually on September 27. On this day, the Azerbaijani people pay tribute to their heroes and honor their courage and sacrifice.
